I've just started the training plan to complete in the 60km option of
The Tarawerea UltraMarathon in March which I'm using as a build up to
The NorthFace 100 in May. The plan Jon has me on includes lots of hill work and long runs with the full gear I'll need for The NorthFace 100 so I've started getting all the gear together.
This post is mainly so I can keep track of what I've got and where I got it from. (Too scared to start keeping track of how much it costs though).
So far I have the following mandatory gear:
Backpack - An Inov-8 Race Pro 18 Hydration Pack with 2 litre bladder which I got from
Wiggle.co.uk
Jacket - Ronhill Vizion Storm Jacket AW10 also from
Wiggle.co.uk (can't wait for it to rain so I can test it out, it looks and feels great)
Waterproof pants -
These from Inov-8. (Ordered from Wiggle)
NorthFace 100-weight long sleeve synthetic fleece top, is
this.
HiVis safety vest I got from
Haverstock.co.nz
Main lighting system is from
GoMotion and is a 3 watt light that fits to the waist strap of the pack or fuel belt. I got mine from
Amazon.
Back up light is a Black Diamond headlamp from
Bivouac Outdoor
Compass is a Silva Field 7 from
Bivouac Outdoor. I better brush up on my survey skills and learn how to use that!
A whistle and emergency space blanket from
Survival NZ.
An Aide System Void first aid kit, which includes the mandatory compression bandage from
Bivouac Outdoor.
All the above fit in a 2l Sea to Summit Ultra Sil Dry Sack from
Bivouac Outdoor.
A Sea to Summit 8l Dry Sack for clothing.
Thermal base layer (all bought from Bivouac):
Icebreaker Bodyfit 200 merino long sleeve top .
Icebreaker Bodyfit 200 merino leggings.
Icebreaker beanie.
Icebreaker lightweight merino gloves.
Still to go:
1 x waterproof map case
1 x Ziploc bag for your personal rubbish
2 x bars / food portions
The other gear I have is:
Shoes - Two pairs of
New Balance MT572's Size US9. I get mine from
Shoe Science. These pairs may not last until May so I might change after the Tarawerea run. I've also ordered a pair of Inov-8 X Talon 190's from Wiggle, which I'll start off just using for training.
Socks - I'm liking the
DryMax Trail Running sock which I get from
Shoe Clinic.
Shirt - On anything over an hour I only wear
Icebreaker next to the skin.
For fuelling and recovery I've been trying a range of products from
Hammer Nutrition. Perpetuem, Endurolytes and Recoverite. I've just ordered some Clif Shot Bloks as well to try out.
I may take my SPOT satellite tracker with me. Both for safety and so people can track me.
